Established in August 1975 'Leo Doherty Menswear' brought high quality, in demand, designer brands which had not previously been available in the area, and had an instant impact on men's fashion in the west of Ireland. The Castlebar store building is steeped in history, in the early 20th century it was owned by the Durcan family and trading as T. Durcan Ironmongers. This multi purpose business housed a travel agency which sold tickets for the Titanic's maiden Voyage. Out of the 14 people from the community Abbergoole and village of Lahardane (known as "Ireland's Titanic Village") 11 of these unfortunate people were lost with the Titanic on April 14th 1912, making it the largest loss of life from any one community in Ireland. Today, in respect of those lives lost and the history of the building we have a spacemdedicated to this history, locally know as "The Titanic Lounge" which houses some old photographs of the Durcan Family and Store in 1905 along with front page headlines from local papers and the national press the day after news of the tragedy spread around the world.
For the official opening in August 1975, Leo, a brother of Sean Doherty then current Dublin Gaelic Football Team Captain and All Ireland Champions, proudly placed The Sam Maguire Cup in the new store window creating quite the atmosphere which spiked massive local interest. The store had instant success and 11 years later, in September 1986 the company expanded and relocated to it's existing 4,000sq ft premises on Main Street Castlebar.
A brand refresh and refurbishment of the Castlebar store once again elevated the profile of the newly named and modernised "Doherty For Men" as one of the best Independent Menswear Stores in the Country. Ireland's first Suit Gallery was opened on the 1st floor as something new and very special for menswear retail in Ireland. The Gallery showcases the extensive range of suits on offer, giving on 'on model' experience, and customers can look at the range in comfort and privacy.
